Stillness

Protea and Sweet William, 2020 (SOLD)

South African protea (so magnificent they are almost more beast than bloom) and the humble Sweet William. When I placed a tiny meditating lady amongst the flowers, she was just perfect, so still in that glittering chaos.

The title comes from her concentration, and is also a meditation on the role of art as described in this writing from Saul Bellow:

"I feel that art has something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. A stillness which characterizes prayer, too, and the eye of the storm. I think that art has something to do with an arrest of attention in the midst of distraction."
