Tiny Artist Box Worlds

Even in this show-and-tell all age, the world of the Artist remains seductive, magical, and often mysterious. “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” - Pablo Picasso

Ghosts and Binoculars, Marin, CA, 2021

These pieces, still a series of studies, are part of Ralph's latest body of work. They explore semiotics (universal symbols) and ideographic writing systems, and how they are invisibly interwoven into our daily lives. The series draws on both representational and abstract symbols, weaving a thread from the San rock paintings of his native South Africa all way up to our smartphone emojis.
