Moments in Miniature 3 – Ralph

Feb 8th, 2024

You know when you are so impressed with someone, that you marry them? This email features none other than my life partner, Ralph Lazar.

Ever since I met Ralph, I've been astounded by his three singular drives (THREE x singular! Triangular? I deserve a medal!) - to spend time in the African bush, to create, and to be a good family man. All three I have captured in miniature.

First - let's go to Africa in our miniature Landrover Defender!

Ralph introduced me to the wilderness of Southern Africa This Glass Cathedral is set in Deception Valley in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in Botswana. As Ralph says, it is perhaps the last place on earth where lions outnumber humans, and so my childhood self would have been VERY surprised to hear I would camp there many times. It took a while, but I have grown to love the sound of lions calling to each other as they pad down sandy tracks at night, and Ralph has grown to realise that pigeons are worth getting the binocs out for (especially green ones).

Art second!
Ralph is probably the only person on the planet who has written out every word of the US Constitution on bits of card, popped them in a box, shaken them around and then randomly stuck them on huge canvases, calling these epic artworks Reconstitution.

He began working as an artist in earnest just before the Trump Era (let us pray we never have to call it The First) and everything he does is BOLD - the title of the Glass Cathedral portrait I made in collaboration with him (below).

Ralph is prolific. His ‘Flow’ artworks document our times through his eyes – capturing the news, music, data and conversations. Often super-size! His ‘Fundamentals’ pieces are more descriptive, documentary-style snapshots and summaries. You can see a compendium of his first five years of art in his artbook - Of Our Times.

As more time passes, his artworks can also be seen as brilliant historical artefacts, history witnessed and transcribed through the eyes of an artist.

Lastly, our family life has been filled with adventures. Perhaps the biggest was moving to California from London in 2010 with our two small daughters. For those 12 years, our favourite thing to do was grab a fire permit from the Point Reyes Bear Valley Visitor Center (in itself such a lovely ritual) and head for an all day picnic on North Beach.

I seem to have gotten carried away with this not-so-mini-email. But I hope a revealing behind-the-scenes glimpse into another side of my inspiration. My life would have been very different without Ralph.

Love Lisa
