Project 2016 – ongoing / Tiny artist box worlds
Even in this show-and-tell all age, the world of the Artist remains seductive, magical, and often mysterious. “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” - Pablo Picasso
Mexico City, Mexico 2013: I made a series of Frida portraits when I spent the summer in Sayulita, Mexico in 2013. I've always been entranced by Frida Kahlo's colours, clothes and charisma. I read that when she arrived in a new place, the local children would often think the circus had come to town, such a jingly jangly sparkly colourful impression did she make!
In 2018 I made a new box, taking this Frida quotation as my inspiration. “I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to better.”
