An unusual touring exhibition of book-themed shadowboxes.
“I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
by Nell Stroud
Nell was the first person I knew personally who wrote an autobiography, about the tough reality of life in a circus troupe. She then formed her own circus in 2000 - Giffords - a magical village green circus that tours England through the summer months. I've caught almost every season, despite living in California. Will be going again in June!
Why do I love the circus so? I watched a circus perform on the grass behind the beach in Cape Town, every afternoon in the summer of 1979. I was in love with the trapeze couple. One day the man fell, and they were never seen again. So I guess I am destined to forever associate love, youth, circus, sparkle and mortality.
